On May 25, an altercation during a traffic stop in Phoenix resulted in an officer-involved shooting, recently released bodycam footage depicts. The Phoenix Police Department shared the video, which documents the violent encounter between 46-year-old Sam Perone and a four-year veteran of the force, FOX 10 Phoenix reports. The altercation took a dangerous turn when Perone allegedly attempted to seize the officer’s weapon.
According to the body camera footage, the dispute rapidly escalated beyond verbal confrontation. At the scene near 25th Street, and Cactus Road, Perone can be heard swearing and is seen disobeying the officer’s commands before the situation physicalizes. “The officer explained the reason for the stop and asked for the man’s driver’s license,” Phoenix Police officials stated. However, Perone’s “aggressive demeanor” persisted, as captured on video, until he purportedly swung at the officer’s head and engaged in a fight, as mentioned on FOX 10 Phoenix.
In the struggle that ensued, the officer’s camera fell, recording audio of the conflict that resounded with kicking, punching, and expletives. Witness footage from across the street shows the latter part of the incident, with a bystander entering the fray in an attempt to aid the officer, who was eventually able to fire a shot, striking Perone in the leg. The officer, despite sustaining multiple injuries, was treated and discharged the same day, per KTAR News…
