Phoenix firefighters urge hikers to take trail closures seriously

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, which means no hiking will be allowed on several South Mountain trails, Camelback Mountain or Piestewa Peak from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The goal is to keep you and first responders safe. Phoenix firefighters expect to be busy during an extreme heat warning, but Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller said you can help cut down on the number of calls by making smart decisions.

His advice goes for even the most experienced hikers. “We have Ironmen out there. We’ve talked to them. We’ve interviewed them and they get exhausted,” said Keller. “Please stay off the trails. If you are going to hike, hike in the early morning or late in the afternoons.”…
