Drug raid near Danelle Plaza stirs community

With the Valley on edge over a wave of recent immigration raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the anxiety hit close to home in Tempe early June 11 when about three-dozen law-enforcement agents staged in the parking lot at Danelle Plaza, on the southwestern corner of Mill and Southern avenues.

Rumors quickly spread on social media of an impending immigration sweep at the plaza, popular among members of Tempe’s arts community and where only a few eclectic shops still are in business, but it was not an immigration bust and Tempe police were not involved, a city spokesperson said.

The U.S. Marshals Service was on the scene to serve a federal warrant and arrest Miguel Angel Vazquez-Favela on assorted drug charges at a nearby home…
