Hiker in Critical Condition After Falling on Closed Phoenix Trail Amid Extreme Heat Warning

A hiker is currently fighting for his life in a Phoenix hospital after suffering a critical fall on Camelback Mountain’s Cholla Trail, a path that was closed due to an ongoing Extreme Heat Warning. The Phoenix Fire Department responded to the distress call on Tuesday, which was reported just after 11 a.m., as stated in an article by FOX10 Phoenix.

Despite the restriction in place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on trails including Cholla, the unidentified hiker embarked upon the journey around 10 a.m. which resulted in a hazardous situation. According to AZ Family, Phoenix Fire Capt. DJ Lee revealed the hiker lost consciousness and fell, suffering from “heat-related issues” in temperatures that soared above 100 degrees. Rescuers quickly utilized an ice immersion bag to cool him and evacuated the individual using a “big wheel” stretcher operation to transport him to safety.

The Phoenix mountain trails, including the one where the hiker was found, are part of a network often closed during extreme heat advisories to prevent such incidents. The closing hours are public knowledge, being posted on the City of Phoenix website for trails such as Camelback Mountain Preserve and South Mountain Park and Preserve.
