PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Catering workers at Phoenix Sky Harbor protested Saturday after the reported firing of a whistleblower who called attention to unsafe working conditions.
Last month, Phoenix officials accused airport catering vendor LSG Sky Chefs of violating the city’s heat and safety ordinance. A city inspector reported that some of the company’s trucks did not have functioning air conditioning.
According to Unite HERE Local 11, Filiberto Lares, the person who called attention to the matter, was suspended from his job with LSG Sky Chefs on Thursday. The reported suspension happened a month after Lares testified about working conditions in front of Phoenix City Council and on the same day that workers demonstrated outside Terminal 4 for better work conditions.
The union says Lares has worked for LSG Sky Chefs, on-and-off, for 28 years and was a primary spokesperson for airport workers. Members met again at Termimal 4 on Saturday morning to protest the company’s reported action…
