Gila River Indian Community may ‘banish’ members convicted of violent crimes

SACATON, Ariz. — The Gila River Indian Community is gathering feedback on a proposed ordinance to potentially banish members who have been convicted of violent crimes.

A survey circulating online until Sept. 13 is asking community members to consider whether the tribe’s council should adopt a process that allows members convicted of serious offenses to no longer live anywhere in the community.
