Man in critical condition after police shooting in south Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man is hospitalized with serious injuries following a shooting involving police officers in south Phoenix on Thursday morning.

Just before 8 a.m., officers were dispatched to a neighborhood near 6th Street and Sunland Avenue, north of Southern Avenue, for reports of a suicidal man armed with a knife. While police were still en route, the 911 caller reported that the man said he would confront officers who showed up.

Sgt. Rob Scherer said officers arrived and, while outside, began trying to evacuate others from the home while also trying to establish communication with the man. During this process, police say the man came outside and ran towards officers standing in the roadway.

Several officers were on scene, including two who tried to stop the man using pepper balls and a 40mm less-lethal launcher. When those tools didn’t stop the man, Scherer says one of the officers opened fire on the man. The suspect was rushed to the hospital in critical condition…
