In a significant development following a disturbing domestic violence situation, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has announced the indictment of Joseph Ortiz on numerous felony charges. According to a press release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred on August 10th, 2025, when Ortiz allegedly forced his way into an apartment in Mesa, threatening individuals with a knife and attempting to drag one victim into his vehicle.
Ortiz reportedly initiated a car chase with police after the initial confrontation. As officers closed in, he fled on foot across the U.S. 60 freeway, which led to its closure for several hours and ended after an officer-involved shooting. Ortiz, born in December 1987, is now facing multiple felony counts, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, and unlawful flight from law enforcement – along with several misdemeanors ranging from theft to reckless driving.
A detailed list of the charges against Ortiz includes one count each of kidnapping and aggravated assault, recognized as Class Two and Three Dangerous Felonies, respectively, and categorized as Domestic Violence offenses. Other charges comprise another count of aggravated assault, unlawful flight, theft, criminal damage, reckless driving, and obstructing a highway.
