Judge denies accused killer’s motion, preventing 20th delay in case

PHOENIX — Sunday marked five years since Mercedes Vega was robbed at gunpoint outside of her apartment in Phoenix. Two and a half years later, officials say she was murdered by the same man who robbed her in an effort to prevent her from testifying against him.

But he still has not gone to trial for the armed robbery case. There have been 19 delays in the case, and on Wednesday, the defendant tried for a 20th.

Five-year anniversary of armed robbery

Sunday was a painful day for Vega’s family as it reminded them of the day their daughter was violently robbed at gunpoint after a suspect followed her home from work.

“It was hard. That was a hard day,” said Erika Pillsbury, Vega’s mom. “It was the day that she learned that the world isn’t always a kind place.”…
