Chuck and Christie were first contacted during a Point-in-Time Street Count while living unsheltered in the Agua Fria River bottom. They were initially reluctant to engage with outreach workers. Their situation changed when authorities planned to clear the area, which could have led to trespassing charges. This led to a coordinated response from the Homeless Services Division, Community Bridges Inc., Phoenix Rescue Mission, the County, and Circle the City. These organizations worked together to assist the couple.
Their difficulties increased when a fire occurred in the river bottom, damaging most of their belongings. After this event, outreach teams helped Chuck, Christie, and Christie’s emotional support chihuahua, Biscuit, move into emergency shelter. Biscuit remained with them during this period.
As support continued, outreach workers learned that Chuck received a monthly disability check. This made them eligible for affordable housing. With assistance, they applied to a new senior housing complex through the Maricopa County Housing Authority.
