Early Wednesday morning, a confrontation between police and a suspect in Mesa escalated into a shooting that left an officer injured and a suspect deceased. Fox 10 Phoenix reports that the incident began with a call about a possibly impaired man trespassing, seated in a vehicle near Sossaman and Ray Roads around 2 a.m. Mesa Police engaged with the individual, resulting in a pursuit when the suspect attempted to flee.
According to Det. John Dreyer’s statement, obtained by Arizona’s Family, officers used a Grappler device to halt the man’s vehicle, but the suspect persisted in his attempt to escape by keeping his foot on the accelerator. Police subsequently employed less lethal means, including bean bags and pepper balls, to bring the man into custody. Despite these efforts, a standoff ensued during which, officers said, the man opened fire from within his vehicle, hitting one officer.
The injured officer was promptly taken to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. “He is in good spirits and in stable condition,” officials wrote, as detailed by Fox 10 Phoenix.
