AZ DPS Troopers forced into life-threatening decisions colliding head-on with wrong-way drivers

A string of wrong-way driving incidents on Valley freeways has law enforcement on high alert, with some cases escalating to life-or-death confrontations. In certain situations, Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers have had no choice but to intentionally collide with vehicles traveling the wrong direction to prevent potential tragedies.

Early Wednesday morning, a driver traveling the wrong way on the Loop 303 in northwest Peoria forced a trooper into a head-on collision to stop the vehicle. This is not an isolated case — in June, a similar incident occurred in Tempe, illustrating the dangers troopers face when confronting wrong-way drivers.

“That’s one of the most dangerous calls for our troopers to go on,” said DPS Director Jeff Glover. “You’re essentially putting your life on the line to stop an individual who’s already endangering everyone else.”…
