Phoenix Man Sentenced to Life for 2018 Double Murder and Kidnapping, Maricopa County Attorney Announces

In a solemn resolution to a harrowing chapter of domestic violence turned deadly, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell declared the life sentence of Dimas Coronado Chafino. According to a press release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Chafino (DOB 11/1971) was convicted for the 2018 murder of his estranged girlfriend, Oralia Nuñez, her roommate, Omar Gonzalez, as well as for the kidnapping of his estranged couple’s two young sons.

On a tragic day in September 2018, Phoenix Police were summoned to a scene of devastation near West Van Buren Street and 35th Avenue. At the residence, they discovered Oralia Nuñez critically wounded, later pronounced deceased at a hospital, at which time it was revealed she was 24 weeks pregnant. Found sustaining severe head and neck trauma in a back bedroom, Omar Gonzalez had been shot multiple times. Having been familiar with the residence from previous calls of Order of Protection violations and threats made by Chafino against Nuñez, officers were not strangers to the potential dangers Nuñez faced.

Chafino’s charges, conveyed by the County Attorney’s Office, included three counts of First Degree Murder, two counts of Kidnapping, one count of Burglary in the First Degree, and one count of Interfering with Judicial Proceedings. Post the grueling crimes, the realization dawned that Chafino had not only ended two lives, but had also fled to Mexico with the couple’s sons, an act followed swiftly by Mexican authorities confirming his vehicle’s border crossing within hours of the murders. After dedicated efforts by law enforcement, Chafino faced arrest and extradition back to Arizona, with the children later being found safe with family in Mexico…
