The reason our esteemed Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell won’t charge a Phoenix nightclub security guard (Arizona Republic, Nov 14) who was involved in a fatal beating is the same reason she didn’t seek serious charges against a former Arizona Department of Corrections director.
In that case, he drunkenly shot a gun inside his home and then waved it around at Tempe police officers. Mitchell bent over backwards to excuse his actions, claiming that it was not possible to prove intent as he was intoxicated. I hope that those accused of DUI don’t use that same logic to escape prosecution. Her idea of protecting the public is apparently going after peaceful demonstrators and attempting to overturn a state law used as a defense by people who face legal retaliation for exercising their First Amendment rights.
I hope that the citizens of Maricopa County remember her actions the next time they go to the ballot box…
