50 taken into custody after border security operation in southern Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A weeklong federal border security operation earlier this month resulted in dozens of people in custody and nearly 50 pounds of illegal drugs found on public land in southern Arizona, the Department of the Interior announced on Wednesday.

During the effort led by the Bureau of Land Management, officers caught 48 people illegally in the U.S., arrested two Americans for smuggling people in the U.S., seized 46.5 pounds of methamphetamine and 3 grams of cocaine and repaired multiple broken fences between Oct. 31 and Nov. 9, federal officials said.

The Department of the Interior said 16 face charges for illegally entering the U.S. after deportation, three are charged as material witnesses and two people face human smuggling charges…
