Speeding driver accused of attempting to race Arizona trooper with 3 children in car

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A speeding driver is accused of attempting to race a trooper while his kids were unbuckled in the backseat in the West Valley earlier this month.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says on Dec. 4, a trooper was heading eastbound on I-10 near Citrus Road when he witnessed a driver speeding at 106 mph and weaving through traffic. As the trooper was catching up to the vehicle, the driver switched lanes, “attempting to challenge the trooper to a street race,” DPS said.

Investigators say the trooper, who was in an undercover Dodge Challenger, pulled over the driver. During the stop, the trooper witnessed three young children in the backseat with no seatbelts on.

The unidentified driver was charged with criminal speeding, reckless driving and three counts of endangerment. His vehicle was impounded for 20 days, authorities said…
