Mesa man who called 911 to report abduction files excessive force lawsuit against officers

MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa father is suing the City of Mesa and two police officers, alleging a call for help turned into a violent detention fueled by excessive force and racial profiling.

Darnay Cockrell, 52, filed the lawsuit after an August 2024 incident in which he called 911 to report that his 4-year-old daughter had been taken by her mother, who he says did not have legal custody. According to the complaint, Cockrell and his daughter were both considered crime victims by dispatch and responding officers, yet Cockrell says police treated him as a suspect when they arrived on scene.
