Phoenix Judge Denies Parole Hearing to Convicted Murderer in 1996 Case of Howard Levey’s Death

More than 20 years after Howard Levey was killed in central Phoenix, the man responsible will remain behind bars. Dan Levey fought to prevent parole, and a judge recently confirmed the convicted murderer will not be granted a hearing. “I don’t see any redeeming reason to let this person out,” Dan told Phoenix New Times, reflecting on the loss of his brother.

In the early hours of a November 1996 Sunday, Howard Levey was killed outside Clarendon Elementary while waiting for his weekly basketball game. He was in his 1994 Ford Mercury when Granados, later convicted of first-degree murder, shot him twice, resulting in his death.

The memory of Howard Levey’s death remains, both for his family and in the broken glass near the basketball court where it happened 28 years ago. In an AZ Central interview, Dan Levey reflected at the site of his brother’s death, while Howard’s widow called his death senseless, saying, “Can there be a bigger waste? This funny, lovely man is gone for a ride of three blocks.”…
