Scott Somers, Mesa’s Vice Mayor, has taken on a new national role as a freshly appointed member of the First Responder Network Authority’s Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC). The PSAC is a crucial entity that provides guidance for the management and evolution of FirstNet, America’s dedicated public safety broadband network. Somers’ appointment is intended to assist in ensuring that first responders, including those from Mesa, have access to a secure, reliable, and high-tech communications infrastructure.
In a statement obtained by MesaNow, Somers expressed the critical importance of effective communication in emergency contexts, saying, “Having spent years in the field, I know that even a few seconds of delay or a dropped signal can be the difference between life and death.” His firsthand experience as a former firefighter and paramedic, coupled with his involvement in policy development, positions him to significantly influence the committee’s decisions.
Somers’ professional background includes serving with FEMA’s Arizona Task Force One and as the past Chair of the National League of Cities’ Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. Currently, he leads Mesa’s Public Safety Committee, where he has advocated for the modernization of emergency systems.
