Mesa to allow e-bikes, e-scooters in parks, canal paths with new rules

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — The city of Mesa approved new rules that e-bike and e-scooter riders use city parks and shared-use canal paths but with restrictions.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, city officials said class 1 and class 2 e-bikes and e-scooters will be allowed on park sidewalks and shared-use paths anywhere regular bicycles are allowed. Class 3 bicycles, which often provide pedal assistance up to 28 mph, will be banned from city parks.

Under the new rules, e-bikes and e-scooters will have a 5 mph speed limit in certain areas. Riders under 18 years old must wear a helmet. The rules also emphasize that pedestrians have the right of way…
