Shuttered Tempe hotel to become construction worker training site

A shuttered hotel in Tempe will become a training center for employees of a construction company, after the company bought the 12-acre hotel site.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Phoenix Tempe closed in January and laid off 114 hotel workers, according to a letter sent to the state from the former owner of the hotel. McCarthy Building Cos. bought the hotel site for $27.5 million in a sale that closed January 7, according to real estate database Vizzda.

McCarthy plans to preserve the hotel building on the site, which features notable architecture inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Officials from McCarthy said the facility will be used to bring thousands of employees from around the country to training programs…
