Board shows mercy to ex-Mesa cop over parking error

A Mesa cop who lost his job after he was accused of lying about a parking mistake will keep his certification.

The Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board last week unanimously rejected staff’s recommendation to revoke Joel Hight’s police license for dishonesty and instead impose a two-year retroactive suspension from Aug. 26, 2023 to Aug. 26, 2025.

The board in March 2024 voted to initiate proceedings against Hight, who was fired by Mesa Police in August 2023 for “untruthfulness by false, deceptive, misleading omitted statements, actions or documentation.”

“In May 23, 2023, Officer Hight was summoned to grand jury in downtown Phoenix,” compliance specialist Al Grijalva told the board last week. “Hight parked his marked patrol car in a private lot located at 241 W. Jackson St. Upon returning to his car, he discovered that a parking ticket had been placed on the windshield of the unit.”…
