Mesa school district readying pink slips amid enrollment slide

Mesa Public Schools is handing out pink slips again due to its shrinking student enrollment.

The Governing Board is expected this week to approve a list of names after giving staff the go-ahead Feb. 12 to begin the process of selecting the employees. Board member Sharon Benson cast the dissenting vote.

“A reduction in force is something we try to avoid,” said Susan Jenni, Human Resources executive director at the meeting earlier this month. “We all try to avoid it.”

The district would not disclose beforehand the number of positions targeted for elimination for 2026-27, hoping that it would be lower by the time the board takes final action Thursday, Feb. 26…
