CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — A Chandler community event originally planned to honor César Chávez was renamed following rape allegations against the civil rights leader.
The event, originally called Noche Illuminada: A Tribute to César Chávez, moved forward with a new purpose to honor the community coming together in service. City of Chandler officials announced the name change earlier this week.
Alberto Esparza, president and CEO of The I Rise Foundation, was honored at the event for his positive impact in Chandler. Esparza founded the Si Se Puede Foundation before retiring and creating a foundation that provides education for girls of color and Native American children.
