A routine bike stop in Mesa turned fatal after police say a man riding without a light was detained, struggled with officers and later died at a hospital. The encounter began near Dobson Road and University Drive, where officers stopped the cyclist, placed him in handcuffs and started transporting him for medical clearance. Somewhere along the way, police say, he became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Officials have not released his identity, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
What police say
According to ABC15, Mesa police say officers spotted the man around 8:30 p.m. riding in the roadway without a headlight and tried to pull him over. The department says he fled, was caught, then resisted and assaulted officers before they were able to get him into handcuffs. Police say he was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated assault on a police officer and because he had an active felony warrant.
