Tempe police submit felony hit-and-run charge in crash that killed motorcyclist

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Police have submitted a felony charge against a then-19-year-old suspected of a deadly hit-and-run crash after partying at a popular college bar last year.

Tempe police said Thursday they submitted a felony charge of failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving a death against Ava Bellowe for her role in the crash.

Investigators said that on Sept. 13, 2025, Bellowe, an Arizona State University student, was partying at Tempe Tavern, a popular bar near campus. Police said she later walked home and then got into a car.

Just before 1:30 a.m., Joseph Gonzalez, 18, was riding a motorcycle near Lemon Street and Rural Road when he hit the back of a Waymo self-driving car that had stopped for a person in the street, police said…
