Balloon-related outages leave thousands without power

Holidays, birthdays, and celebrations of all kinds often include Mylar balloons—those thicker, foil balloons that last much longer than traditional latex ones and standout for high decoration and shine. For such a festive addition, they can also come with an unexpected consequence: power outages. This week alone, Mylar balloons were responsible for leaving more than 10,000 Arizona homes without electricity, including approximately 1,000 residents in Globe.

According to APS officials, “the metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity and can cause a short circuit or power surge that can lead to large-scale outages, melted electrical wires, fires, property damage, and even injuries to people, pets, and wildlife.”

The power outage in Globe on Tuesday, March 31, lasted roughly half an hour, but during the recent heat surge across the region, even a short disruption can have a noticeable impact. Without HVAC or evaporative cooling, and with limited access to cold beverages or ice, the inconvenience adds up quickly.
