Florida Man Pretending to Be Attorney Scams Elderly Man Out of Over $8,000: Police

The caller told the man to stuff $1,000 in eight envelopes, otherwise his grandson would be charged

A Florida man allegedly pretending to be an attorney scammed an elderly Miami man out of over $8,000, after telling him he needed to pay the cash to help his grandson.

The 75-year-old victim got a call from someone claiming to be a lawyer named “Walter Higgins,” Miami-Dade County Police said Thursday, according to Local 10 News .

That caller claimed that the victim’s grandson had been driving 17 m.p.h. over the speed limit and had hit a Bahamian diplomat in Miami. If the grandfather paid him $8,280, the grandson would not be charged, the caller said.

Police said the victim initially tried to call his grandson, who did not pick up. The attorney gave him several reasons why the grandson could not come to the phone, before another person took over the call posing as him.

So the victim sent his wife to the bank to withdraw the cash, which he was told to put in $1,000 increments in envelopes, plus the $280 in a ninth. A courier would then come to collect the money, the caller said.
