Multiple beaches in southern Florida closed on Saturday after mysterious tar balls washed up on the shoreline , with the U.S. Coast Guard still investigating their source.
Sightings of the strange globules, which were described as black and oily, spanned from Port Everglades to Palm Beach, from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. The Coast Guard sent a plane and boat out around the state’s south to investigate the situation, the agency said in a social media post.
Not much is known yet about the strange substance despite the Coast Guard working closely with the Department of Environmental Protection and some other state officials to figure out what they are. The agency hasn’t learned much yet, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
