U.S. 1 tunnel safe despite driver’s report of falling concrete, state says

Drivers have no need to fear using the U.S. 1 tunnel in downtown Fort Lauderdale despite a driver’s recent report of falling concrete, state officials say.

Crews were sent in to inspect the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel last week after a driver said falling concrete smashed into his back window right before he exited the tunnel on April 8.

The damage was likely caused by a truck grazing the ceiling, which has a clearance of 13 feet 9 inches, said Guillermo Canedo, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, which owns and maintains the tunnel…
