Suspected Drunk Driver Arrested for Fatal Wrong-Way Crash Killing FIU Graduate in Miramar

After months of investigation, authorities have arrested Sunshine Renae Perez, a 45-year-old woman linked to the fatal wrong-way crash that claimed the life of a Florida International University graduate and aspiring firefighter, 23-year-old Ezequiel Urrutia. According to the WSVN report, Perez was allegedly driving the vehicle involved in the head-on collision while under the influence of alcohol.

Florida Highway Patrol has provided details that Perez was driving a 2010 Honda Element east of Red Road when she entered the lane of oncoming traffic. The crash occurred early January, but it wasn’t until recently that she was taken into custody and booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. An arrest warrant cited by WSVN stated she had “physical control of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more.”

The collision resulted in Ezequiel Urrutia’s vehicle, a 2016 Honda Civic, striking head-on with Perez’s car and then spinning out of control. Urrutia was honorably acknowledged posthumously with Miami Dade College creating the Zeke Urrutia Firefighter Scholarship, designed to financially support future firefighters who embody Urrutia’s commitment to community service. “His legacy, I can assure you will never be forgotten,” Chief Karls Paul-Noel, Director of Miami Dade College Fire Academy, said in a statement obtained by WSVN. For those interested in contributing to the scholarship, details can be found at the provided link in the same source…
