Deadly Wreck Brings 79th Street Causeway to a Standstill in North Bay Village

A deadly crash on the 79th Street Causeway in North Bay Village Friday night shut down traffic near Adventure Avenue and turned the evening commute into a crawl. Emergency crews arrived within minutes, and initial reports from the scene indicated at least one person did not survive. Investigators kept the area closed for hours while they documented evidence and cleared the wreckage.

According to WSVN, North Bay Village Police said first responders were called to the causeway at Adventure Avenue just before 8 p.m. The department confirmed there was a fatality and said lanes in the area were shut down as detectives worked the scene. The closure was still in place at about 9:45 p.m. while the investigation continued.

History of Serious Collisions on the Causeway

The 79th Street Causeway has seen its share of serious crashes in recent years, some of them deadly and many resulting in lengthy shutdowns. Local coverage, including reporting by Local10, has detailed collisions that closed the bridge and left people injured or killed. Residents and traffic watchers have repeatedly pointed to narrow or limited shoulders and heavy evening traffic as complications when crashes happen.

Bridge Study and Safety Improvements Underway

The Florida Department of Transportation is in the middle of a Project Development and Environment study for SR 934/NE 79th Street that looks at possible bridge replacements and safety upgrades. According to FDOT, the study is evaluating wider or improved shoulders, marked bicycle lanes and sidewalks, and notes that the causeway is part of Miami-Dade County’s emergency evacuation network. Officials say those long-range plans are aimed at reducing crash risks, even as short-term closures and serious wrecks continue to strain the busy corridor.

Traffic Impacts and What Drivers Can Expect

Drivers should plan for delays near the causeway and look for alternate routes while investigators remain on scene. Commuters moving between Miami and Miami Beach may want to detour to I-95, Collins Avenue or other east-west crossings until traffic thins out. County and local crews typically reopen lanes in stages once investigators finish their work and the vehicles and debris are cleared…
