Luke Christopher Tikasingh was arrested Thursday after police say a dispute in a North Miami Beach apartment escalated into threats against both his 72-year-old roommate and responding officers. The incident unfolded in the 1400 block of NE 170 Street. Tikasingh faces charges of aggravated assault on a person 65 or older and assault on a police officer.
The roommate told officers he had been living with Tikasingh for about two weeks and said Tikasingh threatened to strike him with a frozen water bottle. Officers ultimately entered the unit and took Tikasingh into custody without further incident, according to the arrest report.
According to WSVN, the arrest report says Tikasingh became “irate” when officers arrived, yelling and moving items around inside the unit. He allegedly threatened again to hit his roommate with the frozen water bottle. During negotiations, the report quotes him as saying, “I will kill all the officers,” and states that he intentionally threw a water bottle from his balcony in the direction of officers. Police then entered the apartment and arrested him, the report says.
What the charges mean
Florida law treats assaults on seniors and on law enforcement officers as aggravated offenses that carry tougher penalties. Under Florida Statute 784.08, an aggravated assault on a person 65 or older brings a minimum three-year prison sentence and reclassifies the underlying offense. Section 784.07 similarly increases penalties when an assault is committed against a law enforcement officer and allows for mandatory minimum sentences in qualifying cases.

WSVN reports that officers knocked and announced themselves, then began talking with Tikasingh from outside the unit. During that exchange, according to the arrest report, he allegedly threatened the officers and tossed the water bottle from his balcony toward them.
