Hialeah Canal Death Near West 12th Ave Under Investigation

HIALEAH, Fla. — A quiet Thursday morning along a Hialeah canal ended in tragedy when a man died after falling into the water near West 12th Avenue and West 44th Place, according to police.

Investigators said two men were sitting on the edge of the canal when one of them slipped into the water. His friend immediately jumped in to try to pull him out but could not get him to safety. A passerby later went into the canal and managed to bring the victim back to the bank, but emergency crews pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

What Police Say

As reported by NBC 6 South Florida, Hialeah Police said the friend who jumped in was eventually able to climb out of the canal and run for help while the victim began to float away. The death remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional information while they work to notify the man’s family.

Local Pattern and Safety

Canals and other natural waterways have been the scene of several recent drownings in Miami-Dade County. In May, a 7-year-old boy in Leisure City was found in a canal and later died, according to CBS Miami.

Public health officials stress that many drowning deaths are preventable. The CDC recommends swim lessons, close and constant supervision, and the use of life jackets to reduce risks around canals and other natural bodies of water.

Investigation Under Way
