Miami alternative clothing store to close amid high rent costs

Freak House, a Miami alternative clothing store with a cult following, will permanently close its doors this Friday — and co-owner Jim Jones feels the community will lose access to more than a shop.

“I think people just really loved the concept of having a place they could go and be welcome, be comfortable and meet their friends,” Jones said. “They’d just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere. I think that was a big part of it. Unfortunately, you can’t recreate that online.”

Freak House, one of the area’s few in-person options for shoppers interested in alternative styles, will close its only in-person location, situated along U.S. 1 at 9408 S. Dixie Highway, Miami, on June 26, after two years of operation. Jones and his wife Ana Jones, Freak House’s other owner, didn’t originally intend to create an alt clothing store. Jones said the enterprise technically began with a gift to Ana — a dragon figurine. Some time after, the two began selling an eclectic mix of home decor items at Miami-Dade County’s seasonal youth fair, largely “mythical” and “gothic” in nature…
