A Miami-Dade County Public Schools officer spotted a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy on September 9, 2026. While this usually wouldn’t be an issue at all, the two children were running down a North Miami street alone around 6:30 PM, which is far from safe for anyone, let alone two children.
When asked why they were alone, the children reportedly told the police that they had been staying at an apartment with their mothers, 40-year-old LaToya Garland and 36-year-old Mikequisha Gordan. However, they elaborated that the two mothers asked the children to play outside and then locked the door behind them.
Not having anything to do after they played for a while, the children ultimately got hungry and knocked on the apartment’s door multiple times. However, they said that no one opened the door, so they couldn’t get back inside. Because of this, the two walked to a nearby Publix in search of food. Unfortunately, they didn’t get anything to eat there, so they were on the way back to their apartment when they ran into the officer.
This was obviously more than enough for the authorities to take action. They took the children back to their apartment, where no one opened the door. Since they could still hear the phone ringing from inside, they asked a building employee to let them in, and they found both mothers unconscious on a sofa…
