Lists of Publix store closures are circulating online again this week, but most of the stores on them closed months ago, and several are being rebuilt rather than abandoned. A review of local news reports and company statements shows that two metro Atlanta stores closed for good in December 2025, while stores in Kendall and Palm Bay closed so Publix could build new stores on the same sites.
The confusion matters for shoppers who rely on a neighborhood Publix for groceries and prescriptions. A list published Oct. 6 by Rolling Out grouped seven stores together without closing dates, which can make old closures look new.
The renewed attention also comes as Publix’s sales growth has slowed. Grocery Dive reported Oct. 5 that the chain’s net sales rose only about 1% in the second quarter, while comparable-store sales fell 0.5%, a sharp change for a grocer that runs 1,444 supermarkets in eight Southeastern states.
