Marlins Are Open for Business: Cubs Should Be Calling Now

Before the start of the 2024 season, veteran left-hander Tanner Scott was seen as an obvious fit for this Chicago Cubs’ bullpen. His handedness would’ve slotted in nicely as a setup man for projected closer Adbert Alzolay.

Now a month into the season, the Cubs’ closer role is unstable and a key member of the bullpen has been sidelined.

The Miami Marlins made a surprising and early sell-off on Friday by reportedly trading star infielderĀ Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres. If the Marlins are already waving the white flag, the Cubs should be on the phone.

Scott is enjoying a solid start to the 2024 season with a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings of work. Throwing from the left side, he could be a dominant force at Craig Counsell’s disposal.

All it takes is for the Cubs to realize what needs to be done with their bullpen if they truly want to win the NL Central division. Piecing it together simply can’t be the strategy at this stage of the organization’s competitive window.

If the Marlins are in sell mode, several teams will be inquiring about roster updates, Scott included. The Cubs need to act promptly if they want to add what figures to be one of the top relievers on this season’s trade market.
