Will New Tech Make Miami Airport Better? County Leaders Think It Will

Imagine breezing through Miami International Airport without a hitch, thanks to some cutting-edge technology. That’s the dream Miami-Dade County is chasing with its latest innovation challenge, and the results are pretty exciting!

This week, in Terminal D at MIA, three standout startups showcased their game-changing tech that aims to make navigating the airport a breeze. The county’s second innovation challenge, aimed at improving the travel experience, saw some impressive entries from around the globe.

Here’s What’s New:

  1. RouteMe: This Miami-based startup uses artificial intelligence to guide travelers through the airport with ease. Using just their phones, passengers get step-by-step directions, and there’s no app to download. This tech also caters to those with visual or hearing impairments. CEO Dimas Lipiz, who has local roots and a personal connection to anxious travelers, says RouteMe is all about making sure no one gets lost.
  2. Signapse: Hailing from the UK, this company has developed AI software that translates airport announcements into sign language video. It’s like having a personal interpreter for announcements, making the airport experience more accessible for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Pierre Paul from Signapse mentioned they’re looking to expand their team in Miami, aiming to better serve the local community.
  3. Mapsted: Based in Toronto, Mapsted offers a sophisticated digital mapping system that doesn’t rely on traditional GPS. Instead, it provides turn-by-turn directions within the airport and helps manage crowd flow. It’s already in use at airports in Asia and is making its U.S. debut at MIA. CEO Param Nagpal sees this as a huge opportunity to expand their reach.
