Winter to return to South Florida as heat streak comes to an end

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – As Arctic air grips much of the nation, the stage is set for South Florida’s heat streak to end.

The passage of a cold front Thursday morning marks the start of winter’s return for South Florida as north winds usher cool, dry air over Miami-Dade and Broward counties and the Florida Keys.

This is a significant change considering temperatures have been above average for February. Every day since the start of the month, the high temperature in Miami has topped 80 degrees Fahrenheit — that is several degrees above the climatological “norm” of upper 70s.

Low temperatures also have been above average. However, the temperature switch “flips” Thursday night into Friday morning when lows are forecast to dip to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, perhaps even 50s, in Miami-Dade and Broward. That would be several degrees below the “normal” low of 64 degrees for Miami and Fort Lauderdale…
