Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava Seeks Inspection of Krome Detention Center Amidst Reports of Overcrowding, Calls for Humane Treatment

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has formally requested a tour of the Krome Detention Center, a facility facing scrutiny over reports of overcrowding and alleged inhumane treatment towards detainees. In a letter addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Mayor Levine Cava highlighted her concerns about conditions reported within the center, particularly the wellbeing of its inhabitants, as per an announcement on NBC Miami.

The request comes on the heels of increased deportations under the Trump administration, which appear to have quickly outpaced the resources and capacity of facilities like Krome. Despite policy intentions to remove individuals convicted of crimes, the crackdown has seemingly ensnared long-standing community members and green card holders. “With the increase in the numbers of immigrants detained at Krome and across the country, it is vital that we ensure humane conditions for the thousands of people in detention,” Levine Cava wrote, according to NBC Miami. In an effort to directly address these conditions, she seeks to bring a delegation of local, state, and congressional leaders to observe and assess the situation firsthand.

Details of alleged adverse conditions include lack of sufficient food and water, unsanitary housing, and medical neglect. These reports have spurred protests and public outcry, with one social media video pleading for help and describing the living conditions of migrants as inhumane. Elena Muñoz, a protester, told WSVN that “People have rights. They shouldn’t be treated like that. I mean, if you’re going to detain people, make sure you have the space, the room, the facilities to take care of them,” highlighting the urgent need for improvement…
