Mary Brickell inducted into Florida Women’s Hall of Fame

Each year, three nominees are selected for induction into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame. This year, Mary Brickell, often considered the “Mother of Miami,” is among them.

Brickell played a crucial role in shaping Miami into the vibrant city it is today. She arrived in South Florida in 1871 and, alongside her husband, acquired more than 2,000 acres of land along the Miami River.

The Brickells went on to create the first post office, bank, and general store. The pair even opened their home as a makeshift hospital during the 1873 typhoid outbreak…
