Retired Miami-Dade Police Lieutenant Admits Guilt, Sentenced to Seven Years for Attempted Murder of Ex-Boyfriend

A retired Miami-Dade Police lieutenant, Evelyn Fernandez, age 53, has admitted guilt to attempted murder among other charges. According to a Local 10 News report, Fernandez accepted a plea deal today that will see her serving a seven-year prison sentence with credit for time already served. The charges stem from an October 2023 shooting incident involving her ex-boyfriend, also a retired Miami police major.

The court proceedings reveal that, had Fernandez not taken the plea deal, she could have faced up to life in prison. A statement obtained by NBC Miami indicates that Miami-Dade prosecutors agreed to waive the minimum mandatory time of 20 years in exchange for the plea. One condition of the sentence is that Fernandez must to leave the state of Florida, with strict probation guidelines awaiting should she return or remain in-state.

Following her incarceration, Fernandez is mandated to complete a treatment program and, as reported by Local 10 News, she “must continue under the care of a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist and comply with any and all medications her psychiatrist prescribes.” Probation terms also include no contact with the victim and his children, surrender of all firearms, and wearing a SCRAM bracelet for three months post-release from an inpatient program…
