Coast Guard cracks down on illegal charters in South Florida, cites safety violations

MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — Just because you own a boat doesn’t mean you’re the captain.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said in collaboration with federal and state law enforcement agencies, terminated 16 illegal charter operations from May 16 to May 18 in the Miami River, Biscayne Bay, and off Lummus Park. Four vessels were found to be operating in violation of active federal Captain of the Port (COTP) Orders.

The vessels Isabella, Second Wind, Dolce Vita I, and a 26-foot recreational boat were cited for serious safety violations and noncompliance with federal regulations, including the Passenger Vessel Safety Act, according to USCG…
