‘Didn’t give up:’ DNA identifies suspects in 1975 murders of two teens in South Florida

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (CBS12) — Nearly half a century after two 14-year-old girls vanished on a summer day in 1975, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has finally named their killers—unmasking a chilling mystery that haunted South Florida for generations.

The BSO Cold Case Homicide Unit announced on Thursday the resolution of the murders of Darlene Zetterower and Barbara Schreiber — both 14 years old at the time of their deaths. The case was solved using advancements in DNA testing, new information from witnesses.

BSO Detective Andrew Gianino and a team of investigators from BSO’s Crime Lab identified Robert Clark Keebler and Lawrence Stein as the men who murdered the girls on a June day in 1975, shortly after they completed eighth grade. Detectives believe the girls got into a van with the two men in Hollywood and vanished. Their bodies were discovered on the edge of the Everglades the following day.

DNA testing identified Keebler and Stein from samples taken from the girls’ clothing. Both men are deceased and will not stand trial for the crimes. However, Detective Gianino said the case is considered exceptionally cleared…
