A man has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide following a July incident in Cutler Bay that left a landscaper dead. Daniel Alvarez, 57, of Miami, was arrested yesterday, with accusations of causing the death of Carlos De La Hoz Vega, who was a father of two young girls, as reported by NBC Miami.
The incident occurred on July 17th when Vega was working near U.S. 1 and Southwest 187th Street using a backpack leaf blower. According to Local 10, evidence at the scene indicated that Alvarez’s BMW strayed off the roadway onto the sidewalk and struck Vega, “vaulting him onto the hood and windshield before violently striking the pavement.” Vega was wearing a bright green shirt, and the landscaping truck he was associated with was visible and parked in the roadway at the time of the crash.
Following the incident, Alvarez was found asleep in his car in a nearby parking lot. Authorities noted he had difficulty standing, responded sluggishly, and appeared impaired. An arrest report indicated that a substance evaluation was “consistent with impairment attributable to a narcotic analgesic and the downside of a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant,” as Alonso told Local 10.
