A new beginning for public housing complex Culmer Place in Overtown

Overtown is such an important chapter in Miami’s story. It was once a beacon of Black culture, business, and arts, until the construction of I-95 in the 1960s literally cut through the heart of this community — displacing families and lead to decades of underinvesting.

“This was very terrible, mind-boggling. Nobody wanted to come that much to Overtown”, said Ario Lundy, President of Palmetto Homes.

That was the past, but a beautiful future is being built there now. Culmer Place is a public housing complex built in 1977, and it is in deplorable condition…
