Miami’s turquoise waters and famous beaches mask a growing crisis just beneath the surface. The city’s flat terrain and close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean make it a prime target for flooding, especially as sea levels continue to rise. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2024 report, Miami could see up to 30 days of tidal flooding each year by 2030. Streets that once bustled with life could be underwater, and neighborhoods already experience so-called “sunny day” floods. Despite city officials pouring millions into pumps and seawalls, the threat grows more urgent with every passing storm. Residents worry about property values, insurance costs, and even their safety as floodwaters encroach further inland. As one Miami resident put it in a 2025 interview, “We’re living on borrowed time—the water just keeps coming.”
