Florida Hits 112-Year Record Low Temperature

Florida has been blasted by a cold snap, bringing plummeting temperatures as low as 26 F in some parts of the state.

In Miami, the temperature of 48 F recorded on Tuesday was the coldest on record for a November 11 since 1913—over 110 years ago—according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Temperatures in Florida rarely drop below 66 in November, so this unusual, sudden drop has not only thrown residents and visitors into chaos, as they scramble to find warm clothes and prepare their outdoor water pipes and tender plants for subfreezing temperatures, but it’s also affected the state’s wildlife, including its iguanas. Social media has been flooded with images of frozen iguanas falling from trees, as their cold-blooded reptilian systems struggle to generate body heat and cope with the cold temperatures.

What To Know

According to the NWS, Southeast Alabama, the Big Bend, and the Panhandle of Florida are likely to see temperatures falling to around 26, with parts of Northeast and Northern Florida also experiencing sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 until Wednesday morning.

Other parts of Florida, while still well below average, will see slightly warmer temperatures: Coastal Dixie, Coastal Jefferson, Coastal Taylor, Coastal Wakulla, Inland Franklin, and Inland Gulf and Levy Counties could get between 28 and 31, overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning…
