A Miami-Dade deputy who stopped a man who was driving a stolen car Sunday night shot the man in his car, who managed to drive away before abandoning the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
The shooting took place at Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 95th Street, near Miami Central High at 1781 NW 95th St.
“It is unknown if the subject is injured,” Assistant Sheriff Shawn Browne said at an 11:30 p.m. press conference at Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 95th Street. “He is at large.” Shortly before 6 p.m., a license plate reader picked up on a stolen car in the area, he said. A Miami-Dade deputy saw the car a few minutes later at Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 95th Street, Browne said. “He attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and when he approached the vehicle, there was a confrontation which led to our deputy discharging his service weapon,” he said. The man drove away and abandoned the car, Browne said. Deputies found it parked nearby with a firearm inside. Browne did not identify the deputy or the driver.
